Dear Parent(s),
Students will take a field trip to Flagstaff on Friday, February 12th. Permission forms have been sent home. The purpose of the trip is to apply Social Sudies, Science, and Language Arts skills within an authentic setting. Ultimately, students will conduct a scavenger hunt with guided questions in regard to the following: weathering, erosion, water conservation, and the economic impact of snow on Arizona. Furthermore, students will compose poems that reflect the environment of Flagstaff and their experiences.
Spelling: Students are continuing to syllabicate, mark spelling rules, define through context, and determine the part of speech from a variety of words that have been selected from The Giver.
Reading: Next week students will begin Chapter 7 of The Giver. They'll continue to monitor their comprehension and fluency through paired-readings that are coupled with guided questions.
Writing: Students are composing weekly reflections on The Giver. The majority of the reflections are written as persuasive essays. Simultaneously, students are developing arguments for a larger essay that will encapsulate the theme of "individuality."
Math: Students are simplifying expressions and solving algebraic equations. Next week they'll begin to integrate these skills with geometry.
Social Studies: Students are developing an expository essay on Reconstruction. Specifically, they are developing details and effects in regard to the struggles associated with Reconstruction.
Science: Students are receiving instruction on water as a renewable resource and discovering the importance of conservation.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, and I will return your call as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Jason Herring
